The Rate of Change is Changing 

Those are some profound words from a recent conversation Niamh and I were having with one of our partners on Zoom.  

It seems like life itself is now a perpetual sprint, constantly challenging us in new ways to either keep up or get left behind.

It’s too true. I’m sure part of the acceleration that I feel like wind that never stops blowing on my face comes from my being old enough that both of my children out of the house.  This last quarter flew by like a comet streaking across the sky of my life. If I lived with less intention, I would fail to fully grasp its beauty. 

Just like the eclipse last week, enveloping our Austin day in night as the sun became a dark orb framed by a halo of ghostly light and my neighborhood gasped in collective awe. 

It’s easy to lose the moments, big and small as the days fly on by.

So I started out this year committed to capturing the wins of each day. It seems especially important at a time when my days don’t always go as planned. It’s easy to feel like I’m not getting things done, just because my accomplishments didn’t start their day on a list. 

Compiled from a simple document called Daily Wins, here are 17 significant wins I can share with you that occurred over this last quarter. 

1. The year started out with Cindy and I saying goodbye to our children, Lottie and Ethan, as they headed back to their respective lives, each stronger than we had ever seen them before. 

2. After (perhaps belatedly) realizing that our ghostwriting endeavors were outgrowing Sterling & Stone, Niamh and I co-founded Invisible Ink. Built a website, massaged the messaging, and spread the word that our ghosting would no longer be done in the shadows.  

3. After nine months of bullshit that began last May when our biggest client declared bankruptcy, we finally recovered rights to several properties that had been in limbo ever since. 

4. By mid-February, I had written one script, two short stories, and a novella. Just in time to get sucked into the vortex of LinkedIn.   

5. I started exploring LinkedIn’s potential as we were taking an increasing number of calls for Invisible Ink. Not just thought leaders needing books, but pipelines to more of them. A decade and a half spent networking with fellow entrepreneurs was really paying off. 

6. Still on a networking roll for Invisible Ink, Niamh and I had a founders dinner in Austin where we met up with some old friends, and made new ones, including Chandler Bolt — a fellow disruptor of the publishing industry, who we’ve since partnered with to mutually grow the complementary parts of our businesses. 

7. The lights came back on in Hollywood. More pipelines, but this time for our IP, which the industry at large is more invested in than ever. It’s an exciting time to be in the relationships-and-ideas business.

8. After hanging out on LinkedIn for a few weeks, I realized a base was needed to house my content and grow an audience, separate yet adjacent to Sterling & Stone. Another platform was a great means of broadcast, but if I was going public again for the first time in years, the brand needed to feel like a home. 

9. One of the Dickbags in Belize (I’ll tell you that story later) introduced me and Niamh to a former studio head who’s made some of our favorite shows. He lives in Austin and has about 17 ways he wants to do business with us (slight exaggeration, but I got to use 17 again). 

10. We published a celebrity partner project and got interest from multiple production companies immediately. 

11. Our first entry in the “extreme profit” line for Kindle Unlimited (added to our publishing initiatives late last year) hit 2.5MM page reads, less than six months after the line was born. 

12. A couple of incredible projects were added to the Invisible Ink portfolio, with the business growing faster than anything else Niamh or I have built in our combined 40 years of experience.  

13. The Campfire Mystery Box was born. Not only was this email adventure not on the calendar, you would have had a hard time convincing me that it was something I’d be excited about just a few months ago. And yet, the newsletter is one of my favorite projects of this year so far. 

14. I reconnected with Seth, one of my best friends, a phenomenal ideation dude, and a minority stakeholder in Sterling & Stone. We’ve always wanted to make things together, and now we are. Without him, the next entry on this list would not exist. 

15. 17 Offers was born, the idea being that I’ll craft 17 offers or projects in total over the next year-and-a-half, with an ultimate goal of creating $1.7M+ in revenue per year by next August. The first four offers are already plotted, with number one (StoryStreams) ready to go. 

16. I talked to my mom at least once per week for the entire quarter. Hardly a mind-blowing accomplishment, but it’s a first, with our relationship better than it’s been since my childhood, and a ritual I plan on keeping forever. 

17. I finished the quarter a couple of months ahead on content for the Campfire, and developed a strong LinkedIn strategy that is straightforward to maintain, before moving back to scripts and client work, feeling more excited and energized by the work than ever. 

There are so many additional nuggets of rad and details I can’t share, either because of our NDAs or the timing of a given project, but the year has been extraordinary so far, and it’s just getting started. 

As the chapters of this year unfold, every day holds the potential for victory — no matter how the wind blows. Anchor yourself in the victories, and set yourself up for ongoing success.
